Once upon a time two peasants attempted to pass each other, and their nsledges1 became entangled2.

One cried, "Give me room, I must get to town as quickly as possible."

The other said, "You give me room, I must get home as quickly as npossible."

Thus for a long time they disputed.

A third peasant saw it, and said, "If you are in such a hurry, then each of nyou give way a little."

从前，两个农夫试图迎面而过时，他们驾的雪橇却交错在了一起。

There happened a controversy1 between an oak and a willow2, upon the nsubject of strength, constancy, and patience, and which of the two should have nthe preference. The oak upbraided3(责骂) the willow, that it was weak and nwavering, and gave way to every blast. The willow made no other reply, than that nthe next tempest(暴风雨) should resolve that question.

Some very little while after this dispute, it blew a violent storm. The nwillow plied4, and gave way to the gust5, and still recovered itself again, nwithout receiving any damage, but the oak was stubborn, and chose rather to nbreak than bend.

橡树和柳树发生了争执，比谁在力量、稳定性和柔韧性上更有优势，看谁更应得到人们的偏爱。橡树指责柳树，说他柔弱，摇摆不定，疾风一来就随风倒。柳树只说句暴风雨中自见高低胜负，便不再多言。

One day, a little monkey is playing by the well.

He looks in the well and shouts: "Oh! My god! The moon has fallen into the nwell!"

An older monkeys runs over, takes a look, and says, "Goodness1 me! The moon nis really in the water!"

A group of monkeys run over to the well. They look at the moon in the well nand shout: "The moon did fall into the well! Come on! Let'get it out!"

Then, the oldest monkey hangs on the tree up side down, with his feet on nthe branch. And he pulls the next monkey's feet with his hands. All the other nmonkeys follow his suit, and they join each other one by one down to the moon in nthe well.

Just before they reach the moon, the oldest monkey raises his head and nhappens to see the moon in the sky. He yells2 excitedly, "Don't be so foolish! nThe moon is still in the sky!"

Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get nthere, St. Peter says, "We only have one rule here in heaven. Don't step on the nducks." So they entered heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the nplace. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try ntheir best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one.

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains nthem together and says, "Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend neternity1 chained to this ugly man!"

The next day, the second woman steps accidentally on a duck, and along ncomes St. Peter, who doesn't miss a thing, and with him is another extremely nugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment2 as for the first nwoman.

The third woman has observed all this and not wanting to be chained for all neternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to ngo months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to her nwith the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on very tall, tanned(深褐色的) and nmuscular3. St. Peter chains them together and leaves without saying a word.

The woman remarks, "I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for nall of eternity?" The guy says, "I don't know about you, but I stepped on a nduck."

But the escaping nmaiden never cared so much about that. She even threw one glance backwards5. At nlast she was quite breathless and cried to her father, a rivergod, for help. No nsooner had her prayer been uttered than answered, for she had instantly found nherself glued to the ground and a layer of soft bark growing over her fair skin. nShe had been turned into a laurel(月桂) tree. Sighing, Apollo put his arms around nthe tree trunk. The trunk responded by turning thinner. To show his undying love nfor the maiden, he decided6 that the laurel would be his favorite tree and nshould be the prize of honour and fame for deathless poets and poetry. Thus the nmost outstanding poet always desires to be made a poet laureate.
